early dairy at Hughes Ranch

Patrick & Jane Hughes came from Ireland to start a dairy and found a great location next to the Sixes River. After 30 successful years, they were able to build this Victorian home overlooking the river. The hosts provide lots of information on what life must have been like back then. There’s an aerial video of the home and parcel on the Hughes Ranch web page http://www.capeblancoheritagesociety.com/hughes-ranch/

This home served the Hughes family as well as where ranch hands came for meals. The local cedar probably allowed this home to weather the wind, rain and sea spray over the last 100+ years.
this has to be the earliest kitchen island I’ve ever seen.
